OUR VISION & MISSION
SoHK’S VISION
We tackle trauma to build a nation of emotionally regulated, active citizens.
WHAT WE MEAN WHEN WE SAY
TRAUMA. This is more than a single painful event. In South Africa, people experience complex trauma — repeated and layered harm caused by poverty, violence, inequality, unstable home environments, or systemic injustice. This kind of trauma can deeply affect how a person sees themselves and the world, making it harder to trust, learn, connect, or feel safe. We believe that healing from trauma is possible — especially when people are supported, seen, heard, and empowered.
EMOTIONALLY REGULATED. A person who is able to recognise, understand, and manage their feelings — even in stressful situations. We believe emotional regulation is not about “being calm” all the time, but having tools to cope, express oneself appropriately, and bounce back from challenges. It's a vital skill for mental health, learning, and relationships.
ACTIVE CITIZENS. People who participate in shaping their communities — not just through voting or volunteering, but through everyday acts of care, leadership, and accountability. In South Africa, where many feel powerless in the face of injustice or corruption, being an active citizen means believing you can make a difference — and choosing to do so.
